American Flags and Kentucky Flags to fly at half-staff Thursday, May 17th in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in honor of Pfc. Dustin Gross.

According to the office of the governor:
Pfc. Dustin Gross died of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan. He was assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 73rd Cavalry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.

Half-Staff American Flags – Honoring National Peace Officers Memorial Day

American Flags and State Flags to fly at half-staff Tuesday, May 15th across the country in honor of Peace Officers Memorial Day.

According to a Presidential release:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim May 15, 2011, as Peace Officers Memorial Day and May 15 through May 21, 2011, as Police Week. I call upon all Americans to observe these events with appropriate ceremonies and activities. I also call on Governors of the United States and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, officials of the other territories subject to the jurisdiction of the United States, and appropriate officials of all units of government, to direct that the flag be flown at half-staff on Peace Officers Memorial Day. I further encourage all Americans to display the flag at half-staff from their homes and businesses on that day.

UPDATE: American Flags and Arizona State Flags to fly at half-staff Thursday, May 24th in the state of Arizona in honor of Army First Lieutenant Alejo R. Thompson. Flags are flying half-staff on the 24th in recognition of his interment; flags previously flew at half-staff of May 14th in honor of his passing.

According to the office of the governor:
First Lieutenant Thompson died May 11, 2012 in Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. He died of injuries sustained when his dismounted patrol received small arms fire. He was assigned to A Company, 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colorado.

Half-Staff Arizona Flags – Honoring Maj. Gen. Don Owens

American Flags and Arizona Flags to fly at half-staff Thursday, May 10th in the state of Arizona in honor of Maj. Gen. Don L. Owens.

According to the office of the governor:
Maj. Gen. Owens served our State and Nation for 45 years, including a decade of honorable service as Arizona’s Adjutant General and Director of the Arizona Department of Emergency and Military Affairs. Maj. Gen. Owens joined the Arizona Air National Guard as a private in 1952. During his career, he served as Commanding General of the Arizona Air National Guard and Commander of the 161st Air Refueling Group, among other positions. He was named Adjutant General in 1983, and faithfully served in this role until his retirement in 1994. Maj. Gen. Owens was inducted into the Arizona Aviation Hall of Fame in 2010.

According to the office of the governor:
Army helicopter pilot CW2 Viray was killed in a helicopter crash in Afghanistan on April 19, 2012. CW2 Viray was assigned to A Company 2nd Battalion, 25th Aviation Regiment, 25th Infantry Division, Wheeler Army Airfield, Hawaii.

Half-Staff Minnesota Flags – Honoring Nicholas Dickhut

American Flags and Minnesota Flags to fly at half-staff Tuesday, May 8th in the state of Minnesota in honor of US Army Sergeant Nicholas M. Dickhut.

According to the office of the governor:
Sgt. Dickhut died April 30 from wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire in Afghanistan. Dickhut was a Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier and was a member of the 3rd Stryker Brigade that deployed in December and was attached to the 82nd Airborne Division as a forward observer.

American Flags and Arizona State Flags to fly at half-staff Wednesday, May 8th in the state of Arizona in honor of former Maricopa County Deputy Sheriff David Wargo.

According to the office of the governor:
Maricopa County Deputy Sheriff David Wargo passed away early last week as a result of severe head trauma he received in the line of duty in May 2003. Deputy Wargo was attempting to detain a fleeing suspect in a supermarket parking lot when he was dragged by the suspect’s vehicle, causing him irreparable head injury. Due to his extensive injuries, Deputy Wargo continued to receive close medical care until his passing on May 1, 2012.

US Army Corporal Benjamin H. Neal lost his life while serving his country during Operation Enduring Freedom. Corporal Benjamin H. Neal was a member of the 1st Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
