Half-Staff Virginia Flags – Honoring Eric Lawson

American Flags and Virginia Flags to fly at half-staff Monday, August 26th at the Capitol complex in Virginia in honor of US Army Staff Sergeant Eric Lawson.

Flags are also authorized for display at half-staff in the County of York and in any other locality as deemed appropriate.

Staff Sergeant Lawson was assigned to the 10th Transportation Battalion, 7th Sustainment Brigade, Joint Base Langley-Eustis, VA. He had served on four combat tours while serving his country: Operation Enduring Freedom 2002-2003; Operation Enduring Freedom 2006-2007; Operation Iraqi Freedom 2009-2010, and Operation Enduring Freedom 2012-2013 with the 359th Inland Cargo Transfer Company Operations Team.

US Army SSG Lawson was awarded the following decorations during his time of service: The Bronze Star Medal, The Purple Heart, the Combat Action Badge, Army Commendation Medal with three Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Good Conduct Medal with two knots, National Defense Service Medal, Afghanistan Campaign Medal, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon with numeral five, Army Service Ribbon, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, the NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal, and the Drivers/Mechanics Badge, Drivers/Wheeled Vehicle Badge.

American Flags and Kentucky Flags to fly at half-staff Friday, August 23rd in the Commonwealth of Kentucky in honor of Keith Grace Jr., Octavio Herrera & Jamar Hicks.

According to the office of the governor and the Department of Defense:
Three soldiers assigned to Fort Campbell were killed August 11th while serving in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
US Army Specialist Keith Grace Jr., of Baytown, TX, died of injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY.
US Army Staff Sergeant Octavio Herrera, of Caldwell, Idaho, died of injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY.
US Army Sergeant Jamar Hicks, of Little Rock, Arkansas, died of injuries suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY.

American Flags and New Mexico Flags to fly at half-staff Tuesday, August 20th in the State of New Mexico in honor of Rep. Stephen Easley. Rep. Easley was 60 when he passed away August 14th. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Purdue University and his Masters and PhD from Washington University. Rep. Easley served for one sessions representing the people of District 50 in the New Mexico House of Representatives.

Arkansas Flags to fly at half-staff Tuesday, August 13th through Thursday, August 15th in honor of US Army Sergeant Jamar Hicks. Sgt. Hicks died while of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit while serving as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. He was assigned to the 4th Battalion, 320th Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, KY.

Gen. Deane had a 40-year career in the US Army and was named a Four-Star General in 1975. His awards include Distinguished Service Cross (2), Army Distinguished Service Medal (3), Silver Star (3), Legion of Merit (2), Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal (25), Purple Heart, Bronze Star with V Device and the Combat Infantry Badge.

Half-Staff Hawaii Flags – Honoring Robert Fukuda

American Flags and Hawaii Flags to fly at half-staff Sunday, August 11th in the State of Hawaii in honnor of former state Rep. Robert Fukuda.

Fukuda worked as a Japa­nese language interpreter/translator for the US Army Military Intelligence Service during World War II. For this service, he was awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2010.

In 2010, Gov. Tomblin appointed Dr. Lewis as Cabinet Secretary for DHHR, where he served until he resigned due to illness in June 2012.

According to the office of the governor:
Joe F. Smith was elected to the Charleston City Council in 1967 and then as Charleston City Treasurer in 1975. While serving in this capacity he was appointed to fulfill the unexpired mayoral term of John Hutchison. Smith later served as a member of the House of Delegates for the 30th District.
