According to the office of the governor:
Sgt. 1st Class Daniel T. Metcalfe died Sept. 29th of injuries sustained when enemy forces attacked his unit with small arms fire. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment of the 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team based at Caserma Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.

Half-Staff Kansas Flags – Honoring Chief Judge Richard Greene

American Flags and Kansas Flags to fly at half-staff beginning Monday, October 8th in honor of Kansas Court of Appeals Chief Judge Richard D. Greene. Flags should remain at half-staff until the day of his interment; the details of which are pending.

According to the office of the governor:
Greene received a B.S. in Business Administration from the University of Missouri-Columbia in 1972, and a J.D. from Southern Methodist University-Dallas in 1975. Upon graduation he practiced law with the firm Morris, Laing, Evans, Brock & Kennedy for 28 years. Former Governor Kathleen Sebelius appointed him to the Court of Appeals in June of 2003. Greene was appointed Chief Judge by the Supreme Court effective January 10, 2011.

American Flags to fly at half-staff throughout the United States on Sunday, October 7th in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service.

October 7th through October 13th is Fire Prevention Week across America.

According to the Office of the President:
NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim October 7 through October 13, 2012, as Fire Prevention Week. On Sunday, October 7, 2012, in accordance with Public Law 107-51, the flag of the United States will be flown at half-staff on all Federal office buildings in honor of the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Service. I call on all Americans to participate in this observance with appropriate programs and activities and by renewing their efforts to prevent fires and their tragic consequences.

a member of Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Division, was killed in action during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir in Korea.
